Successful Wedding Reception Planning Tips

I thought I would share with you some of the tips I have picked up over the years for planning a successful wedding reception celebration.

1. Hire A Professional Wedding DJ

With the majority of wedding guests saying that the thing they remember most about a wedding is the music, the quality and style of the DJ you choose can dramatically influence the “enjoyability” of the evening for both you and your guests. It’s something to think about when debating whether to splurge on chair covers or DJ entertainment.

2. Your Guests Will Do What You Do

Keep in mind that if the Bride & Groom are on the dance floor having fun then most likely that is where your guests will be! A professional DJ will be fully aware of this and use it to encourage your guests to dance and have fun too.

3. Plan Seating For Your Elderly Guests

It is not a good idea to sit your elderly guests right by the DJ’s table or speakers. They will have a much more enjoyable time conversing with others at their table a little removed from the center of all the action.

4. Don’t Overanalyze Your Timeline For The Evening

Trying to plan the order of events down to the minute will only lead to frustration! Work with your DJ to build a timeline of events and then on the day of your event relax and let your DJ facilitate the event. Your DJ will have the experience to keep your night flowing seamlessly.

5. Place Your DJ Near The Dance Floor

Do not have your DJ setup in some “out of the way” corner! He will need to have a good view of the room and the dance floor to keep your guests engaged. Plus, they will naturally look to him as the MC for the evening.

6. Don't "Micro-Manage" Your Music Lists

Wedding DJs will ask a bride to provide a “must play” and “do not play” list. This helps them gauge what kind of music you will dance to. Keep in mind that your guests will dance to what they know. Experienced DJs can advise you on what songs work well at a wedding reception. They can work with your music lists and pull together song selections that will keep your guests dancing.

7. Don't Underestimate The Importance Of Your DJ Entertainment

I cannot stress this enough! Your DJ can make or break your event. I have heard of “horror stories” from people who chose a DJ based soley on price. The saying "you get what you pay for" is a reality in this industry. Would you choose your caterer or cake vendor because they are the cheapest?

8. Coordinate Timeline And Music With Your DJ In Advance

Work with your DJ about 3 to 4 weeks before your event on timeline and song choices. Get a working agenda in place early and adjust as necessary along they way. Waiting until the week prior to your wedding only adds stress to your already busy schedule and increases the chance that an important detail might get missed.
